Going to the Chapel .... or just to the bedroom?

today i was thinking about the concept of marriage. i wonder what it is like to for go that option and live with a partner in a non-marriage existence? for instance if you live with someone for a long, long time, isn't it just like being married?  do you have different rules on monogamy or are you faithful, heart and soul?

Sting wrote this song awhile ago, "The Secret Marriage".  He is married to his partner, Tracy but they lived together for 10 years before their marriage.  They've been together for some almost 30 years.

Both Frida Kahlo/Diego Rivera, Helen Bonham Carter/Tim Burton, and Jerry Hall/Mick Jagger have an enviable concept of marriage.  All of these lovers lived in separate houses, located next to one another.  In Frida's case, her and Diego were connected by a bridge built between their separate houses.  I think this concept is beautifully symbolic.

Also - wouldn't it keep the love alive in marriage if you had "separate" yet "equal" lives? Seeing the other person would not become an everyday, blase detail, but a special visit, occasion or time for one another.

I guess when it comes down to it, the only really common thing relationships have about them is love. Love is involved in every one.

the secret marriage

No earthly church has ever blessed our union
No state has ever granted us permission
No family bond has ever made us two
No company has ever earned commission

No debt was paid no dowry to be gained
No treaty over border land or power
No semblance of the world outside remained
To stain the beauty of this nuptial hour

The secret marriage vow is never spoken
The secret marriage never can be broken

No flowers on the alter
No white veil in your hair
No maiden dress to alter
No bible oath to swear

The secret marriage vow is never spoken
The secret marriage never can be broken
